Osicka’s Winery in Central Victoria Australia.

The Osicka family has a long tradition of winemaking in the Czech lands (specifically the town of Velké Bílovice in South Moravia), reaching back to the late 18th century. Following World War II, Paul Osicka Snr migrated to Australia as a refugee, with barely a penny to his name. Keen to re-establish the family wine business in his new home, he was led by an old Czech priest to an 1890s vineyard near Graytown in central Victoria, noting that the area was conducive to growing grapes.

Osicka Selection Shiraz 2021, Heathcote Tooborac, Victoria Australia

The Osicka family arrived from Czechoslovakia in the early ’50s. Vignerons in their own country, their vineyard in Australia was the first new venture in central and southern Victoria for over half a century. With the return of Simon Osicka to the family business, there have been substantial changes. Simon held senior winemaking positions at Houghton, Leasingham, and as group red winemaker for Constellation Wines Australia, interleaved with vintages in Italy, Canada, Germany and France, working at the prestigious Domaine Jean-Louis Chave for the ’10 vintage. The fermentation of the red wines has changed from static to open fermenters and French oak has replaced American. Extensive trellising of the 65yo estate plantings is now complete. Installation of a conveyor belt enables 100% berry sorting and eliminates pumping; installation of new vats is another improvement. Paul Osicka, Simon’s father, passed away in 2019 after 50 vintages and over 60 years of involvement in the vineyards. Exports to Denmark.
